Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, known historically as Ragusa, is a beautifully preserved medieval fortified city in the Croatia’s far south. Since 1979 it’s been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.

Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century and was part of the Byzantine empire and later the Republic of Venice. However between 14th and 19th century it ruled itself as a free state.

Today Dubrovnik is considered one of the great tourist attractions of the world. Every year close to two million tourists visit its inner city, many of which arriving by numerous cruise ships docked in its port. Dubrovnik has gained additional popularity through the hit series Game of Thrones. Producers decided its remarkable architecture would perfectly depict King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, and they were right. There are many guided tours through filming locations within the city walls.

High above Dubrovnik, on the mountain of Srd, stands the 19th century Fort Imperial. The fort was built by French during the Napoleonic Wars. With its panoramic views this is a place well worth visiting. There are tours from the city however for the best experience one should climb aboard the cable car which is located in the city and enjoy the climb to the top floor of the fort.

Dubrovnik was severely damaged during the Croatian War of Independence in what is known as the Siege of Dubrovnik. The enemy was at a mortar-range from the city and many historic locations were irreparably destroyed during this times. Dubrovnik was since rebuilt but many of the residents still bear the wounds of those difficult times.

Like any other natural site on Earth – Krka National Park changes its appearance throughout seasons due to various environmental factors affecting it annually such as water levels etcetera… Although winter scenery here can be quite charming especially if there happens snowfall (which is very rare), but still spring time brings with itself most magnificent view over waterfalls as melting snows from Croatian and Bosnian mountains feed rivers causing them rise dramatically thereby increasing volumes passing through these cascades. Split

Located in the central Dalmatia, Split is the biggest and most important coastal city in Croatia. It’s a major hub through which most islands are connected to the land. As many other sites in Croatia, Split is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage.

Historically called Spalato, Split is an ancient city dating back to 3rd century BC. It was first founded as a Greek colony. Throughout history Split was a part of both Roman and Byzantine Empire and later Venitian, Habsburg and French Empire.

The old town of Split is buzzing with history. Construction on Diocletian’s Palace, one of the most spectacular sites in the city, began in AD 305. Inside its walls one can find the Temple of Jupiter and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, underground passages and visit locations from the filming of the Game of Thrones.

Marjan park is listed just outside the city. It’s basically a forest peninsula with just an occasional medieval building scattered within. Perfect for relaxation or easy jogging during those hot summer months.

Not far from Split one can find Salona and Trogir, both of which are archeological wonders in their own right. Salona is actually a city older than Split. It was once home to 60.000 people, the most famous of which was Diocletian. The city, unfortunately, got destroyed during the invasion of Avars and Slavs. Due to the fact that Salona’s inhabitants fled to Diocletian’s Palace, Split grew in importance and got to became the city we know today.

On the hill high above the city of Hvar one can find the Spanish fortress which once served as a prison. Beautiful views open up from the top floor. Back down in the old town one of the most spectacular examples of architecture is the Saint Stephen’s square, the largest square in Dalmatia, along with the surrounding buildings, St. Stephen’s cathedral and the Episcopal Palace. The bell tower on the Cathedral is breathtaking and inside the Cathedral one can find a remarkable collection of art, including the picture of Madonna from 1220. The Episcopal Palace is also full of art, sacred objects and old books and documents.

Because of its favorable position many boat tours are available to Paklinski Islands, Vis and the Blue cave, which is a sight to behold, especially when the sun is at a right angle, transforming the water into the most magnificent shade of blue.
