Split

Located in the central Dalmatia, Split is the biggest and most important coastal city in Croatia. It’s a major hub through which most islands are connected to the land. As many other sites in Croatia, Split is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage.

Historically called Spalato, Split is an ancient city dating back to 3rd century BC. It was first founded as a Greek colony. Throughout history Split was a part of both Roman and Byzantine Empire and later Venitian, Habsburg and French Empire.

The old town of Split is buzzing with history. Construction on Diocletian’s Palace, one of the most spectacular sites in the city, began in AD 305. Inside its walls one can find the Temple of Jupiter and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, underground passages and visit locations from the filming of the Game of Thrones.

Marjan park is listed just outside the city. It’s basically a forest peninsula with just an occasional medieval building scattered within. Perfect for relaxation or easy jogging during those hot summer months.

Not far from Split one can find Salona and Trogir, both of which are archeological wonders in their own right. Salona is actually a city older than Split. It was once home to 60.000 people, the most famous of which was Diocletian. The city, unfortunately, got destroyed during the invasion of Avars and Slavs. Due to the fact that Salona’s inhabitants fled to Diocletian’s Palace, Split grew in importance and got to became the city we know today.

Uncover Zadar’s Best Day Trips

Situated on the middle Adriatic coast, Zadar is rich in history; many empires have ruled it throughout time. Being among other UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Dalmatia, Croatia has a lot to offer in terms of day trips from Zadar or excursions from Zadar or even just a transfer from its airport. There is always something interesting waiting to be discovered!

Zara, as it was called by the Romans and later Iadera, is an ancient city founded back in the 9th century BC as a Liburni settlement. In the 48 BC Roman Empire used it as one of its key colonies. After that Byzantine Empire, Venetian Republic and Habsburg Monarchy took turns ruling over this place too! Fortified old town we see today was built during Julius Caesar and Augustus – when they widened city’s limits so much that there was no need for any more walls around them (Rotunda). Roman forum here is largest outside Italy; church of St Donatus biggest known example 9th-century Romanesque architecture; cathedral of St Anastasia biggest cathedral in Dalmatia; and many gates carved with beautiful artworks are still preserved on those imposing city walls.

MUST-SEE IN ZADAR

Two modern art installations can also be found here: Greeting to the Sun – an illuminated circle representing solar system at very tip of peninsula. During daylight hours it absorbs power from sun cells underneath its glass panels situated all over disk’s surface then uses that electricity during night-time hours making this structure glow thanks only to stars’ light reflecting off polished aluminum plates embedded directly into concrete base under sea level surrounding area must be flooded tidal waves hi-fi system connected via fiber optic cable piano made out pure white marble Otherworldly sounds produced by instrument activated whenever there’re enough waves hitting against some part thereof Ernest Hemingway once said: “Zadar has most beautiful sunset world”. Sunsets in Zadar are definitely unforgettable, especially when accompanied by these creations’ lights and music!

EXCURSIONS FROM ZADAR

Krka National Park Waterfalls

The most popular place people visit for one day from Zadar is Krka Waterfalls. This natural beauty is located around 75 kilometers away from coastal town. The waterfalls belong to Krka River National park and can be reached within short walking distance through wooden footbridges leading you over stunning river landscapes with preserved ecosystem. During summer months swimming is allowed at some points of Krka waterfalls, especially at Skradinski Buk waterfall which represents the highest level of this location’s uniqueness.

Telascica Nature Park

Another attractive natural phenomenon near Zadar that makes a great option for spending whole day outside city limits is Telascica Nature Park on island Dugi Otok (Long Island). Its unique landscape includes breathtaking cliffs overlooking sea, beautiful bays surrounded by dense pine forests, warm salt lake Mir and many hiking paths offering magnificent panoramic views over Adriatic Sea coastline! You can either join organized trip departing daily from city center or take your own car and drive it onto ferry which will transport you towards island where national reserve itself awaits exploration.

Nin

Nin – small charming coastal town located just about fifteen kilometers northward direction along Croatian coast line starts here! Apart from having long flat sandy beaches stretching kilometers into horizon there is also historical old part of town known as “cradle” because Croatia began its life right there! You should not miss seeing country’s largest Roman temple nor numerous churches dating back centuries such church Sv Križ (St Cross) housing famous statue Grigora Ninsko but more importantly believed to bring good luck if touched on certain spots

Long Island (Dugi Otok) & Sakarun Beach

Sakarun Beach on Long Island, which is famous for its turquoise dazzling clear sea and white sandy beach with a Caribbean touch. Telascica National Park in Long Island also offers stunning beaches, a stalactite cave and a blue grotto for kayaking.

Zrmanja River & Rafting

About 40 minutes drive from Zadar is the beautiful karst river called Zrmanja. The most attractive part of the river is the canyon through which it flows—a mighty gorge that had served as a backdrop for many scenes in Winnetou movies. It can be visited by kayak or raft, passing along waterfalls dropping into turquoise waters against the breathtaking nature of this area.

Plitvice Lakes

Although relatively far from Zadar, Plitvice Lakes National Park should not be missed. Rivers interweave with each other here creating waterfalls that fall into lakes—natural beauty without equal. It is perfect for those who love nature and peace.

Velebit Mountains

Croatia’s largest natural park lies at about 70 kilometers distance from Zadar—the Velebit Mountain Range. It offers wonderful vistas over Croatian landscape as well as great hiking opportunities on marked paths leading up to peaks such as Sveto Brdo or Tulove Grede which are frequently used as shooting locations in Karl May movies among others—it’s definitely worth visiting if you’re into trekking!

Trogir & Split

On the Dalmatian coast, we recommend taking a day trip to Trogir or Split while staying in Zadar because both towns are located quite near each other but have their own unique charm. The old town of Split boasts beautiful Renaissance and Baroque architecture while Trogir has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage site due to numerous well preserved buildings mainly from Romanesque period; moreover, picturesque waterfront promenades lined up with cafes invite for relaxation and people-watching.

Hvar

Hvar is an island situated in middle/southern Adriatic. It’s been inhabited since prehistoric times and grew in importance as a major port in Greek and Roman Empire where is was known as Pharos. Stari Grad (Old Town) is one of the oldest settlements in Europe dating back to 384 BC. Stari Grad Plain, an ancient agricultural field, is now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Today Hvar is mostly known as a posh place and it’s usual to see some of the biggest yachts in the world anchored outside the city of Hvar. The nearby island of Stipanska is home to a world famous club Carpe Diem. However Hvar has much more to offer than entertainment.

On the hill high above the city of Hvar one can find the Spanish fortress which once served as a prison. Beautiful views open up from the top floor. Back down in the old town one of the most spectacular examples of architecture is the Saint Stephen’s square, the largest square in Dalmatia, along with the surrounding buildings, St. Stephen’s cathedral and the Episcopal Palace. The bell tower on the Cathedral is breathtaking and inside the Cathedral one can find a remarkable collection of art, including the picture of Madonna from 1220. The Episcopal Palace is also full of art, sacred objects and old books and documents.

Because of its favorable position many boat tours are available to Paklinski Islands, Vis and the Blue cave, which is a sight to behold, especially when the sun is at a right angle, transforming the water into the most magnificent shade of blue.
